I haven't had a VW for a few years but I don't seem to have any correspondence from VW breakdown neither did I get anything when I picked it up?, is this normal nowadays?

Not sure get anything, although it may be in an email. Essentially if you breakdown you press the spanner icon in the overhead panel and it will connect you with VW and they will get the AA out to you. This only lasts for 12 months unless you buy an extension

One year AA breakdown with new VW, 3 years warranty.
Not like the Hyundai’s with 5 year warranty and 5 year AA cover provided vehicle is serviced regularly by Hyundai.

Oh yeh I know you get 1 year it's just I don't have any paperwork to say this, you used to get a letter with a little card in it.

Card not necessary as you call VW if you need help and they verify that you have cover.

What happens if your breaks down in year 2 or 3 with a warranty issue, e.g. water pump, and you haven't renewed your one year breakdown cover? Do you have to make your own way to a VW garage? If so, it seems quite miserly as many cars have breakdown cover which lasts for the same time as the warranty period.

Yeh guess so, hard to say as you don't get any paperwork anymore!, from memory it's always been that way though.

When I had my Mk2 Tiguan it had a recal where the car could set fire if they didn't apply a fix, when I tried to book it in they wanted to charge me for a hire car!

The AA will contact you before the year is up to offer you an extension of the cover. Loan cars should free if the work is warranty related. Sometimes there is an admin charge but Ive always found that has always been waived if the work is warranty related
